HAND AND SKIN HYGIENE

What are the steps to creating a realistic hand hygiene program?

Hand hygiene doesn’t have to be a complicated task.  Making handwashing easy improves compliance, reduces the risk of infection, keeps staff safe, and pleases your patients.  By creating a realistic step-by-step program, your health care facility is sure to see positive results.

1. Soap: Antimicrobial soaps should be available at all wash stations.  Closed dispensers and automatic dispensing systems are recommended to prevent the spread of infection.  Counters are necessary to track handwash performance.  Resurgent offers a variety of antimicrobial soaps, including medical-grade CHG, which is highly recommended.

2. Water: Temperature is an essential factor to encourage handwashing compliance.  The ideal temperature will be warm, around 100 degrees, to assist in pathogen removal.  The CleanTech IC is set at 102 degrees, which is comfortable.  Exceedingly hot or cold temperatures are not recommended as they are known to cause dryness and irritation.

3. Towels: Blow dryer systems are known to leave hands damp, if they are used at all.  Damp hands readily transfer germs.  Providing single use paper towels or an automated paper towel dispenser promotes cleanliness by adding friction and thoroughly drying hands.

4. Sanitizer: Instant hand sanitizers should be used only when handwashing is not immediately available.  Additional sanitizers, such as the CHG (Chlorhexidine gluconate) 2% used in the CleanTech IC automated handwashing and monitoring system, provide a residual to continue killing pathogens after the wash.  Resurgent’s CHG solution provides a 6-hour persistent effect.

5. Schedules & Guidelines: Handwash guidelines should be established based on CDC recommendations, number of patients, number of procedures, and facility size.  Resurgent can assist in determining the optimal wash schedule for your healthcare facility.

6. Time & Convenience: Handwash stations should be located throughout the facility or in easy walking distance to patient contact areas.  Cycle time is also important.  Resurgent’s CleanTech systems provide a simple 10-second wash, sanitize, and rinse cycle.  Manual handwashes should be between 15-30 seconds for maximum effectiveness.

Creating a hand hygiene program specific to your needs is important.  For help in establishing and implementing hand hygiene guidelines, visit the CDC website or contact Resurgent for consulting services.
